It’s Not About Tennis: Understanding Your Weight Set Point
Until a couple of years ago, if someone had mentioned a “set point” to me…
I’d probably have assumed they were talking about tennis.
I’d never heard of the idea that our bodies may have something called a weight set point.
The more I read, the more fascinated I became.
It also explained something I’d always struggled to understand.
Why losing weight can feel so difficult.
Your Body Likes Familiar
While researching weight loss, I came across the idea that our bodies may try to defend a weight they’ve been at for a long time.
A bit like a thermostat in your house.
If you set your heating to 20°C, every time the temperature drops, the heating comes on to bring it back.
Some researchers believe our bodies behave in a similar way with body weight.
If you’ve spent years at a particular weight, your body may respond to weight loss by making you hungrier, reducing the amount of energy you naturally burn, and encouraging you back towards what it has come to see as “normal.”
It’s thought to be one of the reasons maintaining weight loss can feel so challenging.
My First Reaction
At first, I found the idea incredibly discouraging.
I remember thinking:
“Well… that’s it then.”
“If my body’s set point is nearly 17 stone, am I going to be fighting this battle forever?”
It felt like I’d been dealt a hand I couldn’t change.
Thankfully, I kept reading.
The Part That Gave Me Hope
As I dug deeper, I discovered that the idea isn’t quite as simple as a fixed thermostat that can never move.
Our bodies are remarkably adaptable.
Many researchers now think that while our bodies can resist change, what feels “normal” can gradually shift over time.
In other words…
If you consistently maintain healthier habits and a healthier weight, your body may slowly begin to accept that as its new normal.
I found that incredibly encouraging.
It meant I wasn’t fighting my body forever.
I was teaching it something new.
Suddenly Everything Made Sense
It also explained something I’d experienced myself.
The first few weeks of eating healthier often felt like hard work.
I was hungrier.
I missed old foods.
Sometimes it felt as though my body wanted me to go back to the way I’d always eaten.
Rather than seeing that as failure…
I started seeing it as my body trying to protect what it believed was normal.
That changed my mindset completely.
Patience Matters
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt is that our bodies don’t always change as quickly as we’d like.
We’ve often spent years building our current habits.
It makes sense that our bodies may need time to adapt to new ones.
That’s another reason I believe quick fixes rarely work.
Healthy habits aren’t something we do for a few weeks.
They’re something we gradually build into everyday life.
My Health Journey
When I first began losing weight, I thought success was all about the number on the scales.
Now I see it differently.
Every nutritious meal.
Every workout.
Every walk.
Every good night’s sleep.
Every healthy decision.
They’re all quietly teaching my body what “normal” looks like.
Not in a single day.
But over months and years.
My Biggest Takeaway
Learning about weight set point didn’t make me feel defeated.
It gave me hope.
It reminded me that lasting change isn’t about fighting your body.
It’s about working with it.
By consistently making healthier choices, you’re not just changing today’s number on the scales.
You’re gradually creating a healthier future that your body can begin to recognise as its new normal.
Takeaway
The first time I heard the phrase weight set point, I thought it sounded like something from Wimbledon.
Now I see it as something much more important.
Not because it gave me an excuse.
But because it gave me patience.
It reminded me that if my body had spent years learning one version of normal…
I shouldn’t be surprised if it takes time to learn a healthier one.
